SUMMER INSTITUTE

The 2024 Summer Institute will be from Sunday, June 2 through Friday, June 7.

Our EFCT Training has been game-changing for those who attend. It offers new insights and perspectives for EF work. Participants gain applicable skills that elevate their work with EF challenged students.

For the second consecutive year, Dr. Sebastian Kaplan, co-author of Motivational Interviewing in Schools, will join the Summer Institute for a two-day intensive workshop on Advanced Motivational Interviewing (MI).

Executive Function Certificate Training (EFCT) is an assessment-based certificate program for educators and other professionals who provide executive functioning support for children and adolescents. EFCT combines cognitive, learning, and neuroscience with evidence-based best practices to set the standard for executive function skill intervention. Based on a comprehensive, student-centered neurodevelopmental model that incorporates motivational interviewing, executive function coaches and tutors will engage students in bridging and closing gaps in their executive function development.

EFCT participants will receive training on and resources for the following:

  • Understanding neuro learning

  • Executive function constructs

  • Assessment

  • Best practice interventions

  • Protocol for establishing an independent EF practice

  • Evaluation, case study, and ongoing support

ADVANCED MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING

Motivational Interviewing is an evidence-based approach for helping students make positive changes in their lives. Many students will face challenges that become overwhelming resulting in resistance, reluctance, and resentful feelings towards school.

As noted in this NASP article, this type of training is critical. We will provide school counselors, administrators, and other professionals with the tools to engage students, parents, and others that are encountering significant challenges. As we invest in our students, families, and communities through Motivational Interviewing, we can collaborate effectively through difficult times and celebrate positive changes and successes.

The Cliff Valley Institute welcomes Dr. Sebastian Kaplan, co-author of Motivational Interviewing in Schools: Conversations to Improve Behavior and Learning. Dr. Kaplan will join Tamara Hamilton, Director of the Cliff Valley Institute, for two days of advanced Motivational Interviewing training. Participants will learn and practice:

  • four processes of MI

  • MI strategic communication and interventions

  • skilled pacing for evoking change

  • strategies for managing expectations for students, parents, and school

In addition to the two-day training, participants will have an opportunity to enhance their comprehension and application of MI with Dr. Kaplan through a booster session during the fall semester. Participants will be able to access ongoing support and supervision from the Cliff Valley Institute as well.

This program was approved for 12 Core Continuing Education (CE) Hours by the National Association of Social Workers-Georgia Chapter as authorized by Georgia Composite Board of Professional Counselors, Social Workers and Marriage and Family Therapists.

2024 Dates: June 6 - 7, 9:00am - 4:00pm

“The EFCT training with Tamara and Ashley took my practice to the next level. I had an extensive knowledge and experience base, but this course offered MUCH empirical, research, and practical information that I truly use on a daily basis with my clients. It is going to take me some more time to fully implement all of the amazing information and experiences. Tamara and Ashley worked well together, had a fantastic plan, "read the room" well, included everyone without being pushy, were fun, and really know their stuff. Thank you!”

  • Summer Institute Participant

“This has been the most useful and practical training I have ever received. While I have done a smattering of the methods with my students over the past 29 years, I am eager to put it all together in this more concentrated model.”

  • Summer Institute Participant

“I learned so much from the in-person training and would love the opportunity to work with this group of trainers again! It was honestly one of the most empowering trainings I’ve ever been a part of. I truly feel like I can help my clients more with just the motivational interviewing component.”

This course was one of the most beneficial professional development courses I have attended in my 20-year career. I feel that I was truly given insights to help me improve the work that I do with students on a day-to-day basis. I would highly recommend this class to other colleagues.
